Elizabeth B. Hurlock was born on August 3, 1898, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the youngest of four children and grew up in a supportive and intellectual family. Her father was a professor of mathematics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University, and her mother was a teacher and a suffragist. Hurlock showed an early interest in psychology and education, and graduated from high school at the age of 16.
Hurlock pursued her undergraduate degree at Columbia University, where she majored in psychology and minored in education. She graduated with honors in 1919 and received a scholarship to continue her studies at Columbia's Teachers College. There, she earned her master's degree in 1920 and her doctorate in 1922, under the supervision of Edward L. Thorndike, a prominent behaviorist and educational psychologist.
Career and Achievements
After completing her doctoral degree, Hurlock joined the faculty of Columbia University as an instructor of psychology. She taught courses on child development, educational psychology, and mental hygiene. She also conducted research on various topics related to child and adolescent psychology, such as intelligence testing, personality traits, social adjustment, peer relations, sex differences, and vocational guidance.
In 1928, Hurlock published her first textbook, The Psychology of Dress, which explored the psychological aspects of clothing and fashion. The book was well-received by both students and professionals, and was translated into several languages. In 1931, she published another textbook, Child Development, which became one of the most popular and influential books on the subject. The book covered the physical, mental, emotional, and social development of children from birth to adolescence, using scientific evidence and practical examples. The book went through six editions and was widely adopted by colleges and universities around the world.
In 1935, Hurlock moved to Pennsylvania State University as a professor of psychology. She continued to teach and write books on developmental psychology, such as Adolescent Development (1947), Personality Development (1950), Developmental Psychology (1953), Social Development (1964), Lifespan Development (1972), and Human Development (1978). She also served as a consultant for various educational and psychological organizations, such as the American Psychological Association, the National Education Association, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Hurlock retired from Pennsylvania State University in 1969 but remained active in her field until her death on October 30, 1988. She received many honors and awards for her contributions to psychology and education,
such as the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of University Women, the Citation for Distinguished Service from the American Psychological Association, and the Honorary Doctorate from Columbia University.
